NUMBERS – Chapter 22 – KJV – Audio & Text with Headings
Numbers Chapter 22 Summary Background: After the Israelites defeat the Amorites (Num. 21), they camp in the plains of Moab, near the Jordan River across from Jericho. Balak, the king of Moab, fears the Israelites because of their numbers and recent victories. He seeks to weaken them by hiring Balaam, a diviner from Pethor (near the Euphrates), to curse Israel. Key Events: Balak Sends for Balaam (vv. 1–7) Balak sends elders of Moab and Midian with a fee for divination to Balaam, asking him to curse Israel so that Moab can defeat them. Balaam tells them to stay the night while he consults the Lord. God Forbids Balaam to Curse Israel (vv. 8–14) God tells Balaam, "Do not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed." Balaam refuses Balak’s request, and the messengers return empty-handed. Balak’s Second Attempt (vv. 15–21) Balak sends more prestigious messengers with greater rewards. Balaam initially refuses, saying he cannot go beyond God’s command, but after further insistence, God permits him to go only if he speaks what God tells him. Balaam’s Donkey and the Angel (vv. 22–35) As Balaam travels, God is angry (likely because Balaam’s heart is greedy) and sends an angel with a drawn sword to block his path. Balaam’s donkey sees the angel three times and avoids it, but Balaam, blind to the angel, beats the donkey in frustration. The Lord opens the donkey’s mouth, and it rebukes Balaam. Finally, God opens Balaam’s eyes, and he sees the angel, who warns him to speak only God’s words. Balaam Meets Balak (vv. 36–41) Balak greets Balaam and questions his delay. Balaam reiterates that he can only speak what God tells him. Balak takes Balaam to a high place (Bamoth-Baal) where they can see part of the Israelite camp, preparing for the divination. Key Themes: God’s Sovereignty: Despite Balak’s plans, God protects Israel and will not allow them to be cursed. Balaam’s Greed vs. Obedience: Though Balaam claims loyalty to God, his willingness to go with Balak’s men suggests mixed motives. Divine Intervention: The talking donkey and the angel emphasize that God controls the situation, not human schemes. Next Steps: In Numbers 23–24, Balaam will deliver four prophecies—each blessing Israel instead of cursing them, frustrating Balak. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Book of NUMBERS, is available in audio format from the King James Version of the Holy Bible.
