28th September, 2024 | Saturday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time | Daily Gospel Reflections
Reading 1 ECCL 11:9—12:8 Gospel LK 9:43B-45 While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, “Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. Reflections: In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, about his suffering and death. We also notice the reactions of the disciples. At that time, the words of Jesus had not yet been fully understood by them; even the seriousness of Jesus’ announcing about his death. The apostles, being with Jesus, are aware of the good being done, which amazed and brought pleasure and satisfactions to them. They didn’t think about the hardship and pain that they would have to go through in life. They didn’t even imagine about Jesus ‘suffering and death on the cross. For them, being with Jesus was so good and comfortable. The disciples understood the importance of Jesus’ life and death only gradually after the resurrection, and the coming of the Holy Spirit who enlightened them, how Christ freed humankind from the clutches of sin and death. Only then did they understand the price that Jesus had paid on the cross to give us eternal life. Activity: Write a letter or audio recording to loved one who passed away – parent, sibling, friend, colleague, and with whom you still have to reconcile certain situations.
