Commission: No deal Brexit costly and disruptive

(4 Apr 2019) Just days before Britain is due to leave the European Union, senior officials of the European Commission said on Thursday that a no-deal Brexit would be "extremely costly and disruptive". The Vice President of the European Commission Jyrki Katainen reiterated that "a hard Brexit is increasingly possible." Asked whether border posts would be built between the Republic of Ireland and the UK's Northern Ireland in the case of a no-deal scenario, Katainen said "we have to make sure that products entering to the EU territory are safe and they comply with our quality standards." Checks would be done, he said, "in the least possible disruptive manner and, when possible, as much away from the border as is practically useful." Meanwhile, the European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc added that the Commission "has carried out extensive preparations" for a no-deal scenario.
