District Collector M S Prasanth informed reporters in Kallakurichi that the victims had consumed 'packet arrack,' an adulterated form of liquor, which led to the devastating outcome. The incident occurred on June 18, affecting a group of daily labourers from Karunapuram in the district. Shortly after consuming the liquor, many individuals began experiencing severe symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain, and eye irritation, necessitating immediate medical attention. According to figures quoted by media agencies, 109 people are undergoing treatment across several hospitals. The cases of those in critical condition is being monitored closely. Medical resources have been mobilised swiftly, with additional personnel and specialists deployed from nearby government medical colleges to manage the influx of patients.
