Officers and civilians killed as suicide bomber targets police checkpoint

(21 Apr 2014) Suicide bombings and other attacks across Iraq killed at least 19 people and wounded 36 on Monday, the latest in a spike in violence as the country counts down to crucial parliament elections later this month. In a suicide attack in the town of Suwayrah, a bomber drove his explosive-laden car into a police checkpoint killing 12 people, five policemen and seven civilians. A police officer said the explosion also wounded 19 people. Other attacks took place in towns around Baghdad, including Madain, Mishahda, and Latifiyah.
