It's the fourth main installment in the Silent Hill series, though it notably deviates from the formula established by its predecessors. The game follows Henry Townshend, who finds himself inexplicably locked inside his apartment (Room 302) in South Ashfield, a town neighboring Silent Hill. After being trapped for five days with no way to communicate with the outside world, a mysterious hole appears in his bathroom wall, offering the only escape from his apartment. Silent Hill 4 introduced several new mechanics to the series: First-person perspective when in Room 302, switching to third-person in the outside world A limited inventory system An "escorting" mechanic in the second half of the game A unique "ghost" enemy type that cannot be permanently defeated Room 302 serving as a hub area and safe room (at least initially) The game is structured into two distinct halves. In the first half, Henry explores various locations through portal holes, returning to his apartment between areas. Henry discovers the apartment's previous tenant was a serial killer named Walter Sullivan, who is conducting a bizarre ritual involving 21 sacrifices to "purify" his "mother" - which he believes to be Room 302 itself. Henry learns he is intended to be the final victim. The narrative weaves together themes of isolation, childhood trauma, religious cults, and psychological horror, exploring Walter's disturbed past and connection to the orphanage run by the cult from previous Silent Hill games. Silent Hill 4 received generally positive reviews but was considered more divisive among fans than previous entries. It was praised for its unsettling atmosphere and psychological narrative but criticized for some gameplay elements, particularly the escort sections and ghost enemies.
