About Surah Takathur: Surah Takathur (Arabic text: التكاثر) is the 102nd chapter of the Qur’an. Background information: Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (ﷺ) said: ‘Can one of you not recite a thousand verses daily’? They said, ‘Who is able to recite a thousand verses?’ Nabi (ﷺ) replied, ‘Aren’t you able to recite Alhakumut Takathur’? (referring to Surah 102) This signifies the importance or the virtue for one who recites Surah Takathur. Surah Takathur is classified as a Meccan surah and means ‘vying for increase’. The surah provides the believers a view of how to live in this world that values materialistic tendencies. As mentioned previously, there is no sin in being wealthy or acquiring wealth but issues a warning to those who chase and get distracted by the wealth creation game. It reminds s to not forget one’s religious duties and to give zakat which can be counter-productive to one who has a strong desire to accumulate and hoard wealth.
