Part 1 of 4. Flail chest presents with at least two fractures of at least three consecutive ribs, typically caused by blunt injuries to the anterior or lateral thorax. It has profound effects on ventilation. Traumatic chest injuries often negatively affect the patient’s ability to ventilate, exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide, and/or sustain adequate perfusion.
