The Dragon Was Defeated: A Holy Week Devotional Day 1
Day 1: The Dragon Stirs — Passover and the Shadow of the Exodus Scripture: Luke 22:7–20; Exodus 12 Theme: Jesus as the Lamb of God, inaugurating a new exodus from bondage — not to Pharaoh, but to the cosmic powers. Verses Luke 22:19-20 (ESV): And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” Exodus 12:13 (ESV): The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt. Devotional In the upper room, the Messiah reclined at the table, surrounded by twelve men — symbolic of Israel’s tribes. But unseen to mortal eyes, the cosmic forces of darkness circled like vultures. The chaos dragon, ancient and coiled, had long nested in the thrones of Egypt, Babylon, and Rome. Yet now, it trembled. Why?Because the Lamb was about to bleed, not just to protect a household from death, but to shatter the foundations of death itself. This was a re-enactment of Passover, but also its escalation. Where Exodus defeated Pharaoh, this Passover targeted the principalities behind him — those Paul would later call the rulers of this age who did not understand (1 Cor 2:8).In this moment, the Lamb of God set His face toward the cross, stepping into the ancient arena where Leviathan, Rahab, and Death waited to strike. Reflection Where in your life are you still enslaved to fear? What chains remain? The Lamb is not just your substitute — He is your warrior.
