Castlevania II: Simon's Quest 1cc
In this video, I beat Simon's Quest in under seven in-game days, which was my completely arbitrary goal for the game once I realized that beating it in general (or even deathless) is not very difficult. Nevertheless, I incurred a death and decided to upload this video anyway, partially because the death was pretty ridiculous and partially because I don't really want to play this game again. My feelings on this game are extremely mixed, and I think I'll have to go into them in more detail in the commentated version of this run. In brief, I think that the game is brimming with soul, has a unique atmosphere and a few good music tracks, and is a fascinating experiment. It's much more interesting than other games that are more technically competent, like Legends or Dracula X. That being said, I do think the game suffers from lackluster combat, repetitive environments, and yes, some pretty obtuse puzzles. I realize that last point is a particularly controversial one, so I want to make it clear that I am not advocating for the conspiracy theory that the game was made to be confusing on purpose to sell strategy guides, I'm only saying that the solutions do not seem to be clearly suggested by anything in the game itself. All in all, it's not the criminally underrated hidden gem that some people claim, and it's also not the unplayable garbage that other people allege. Personally, I think it's worth playing if only because it's an utterly singular experience. Done on emulator, FCEUX.
