Dr. Snipes discusses parenting mistakes that can harm a child's self-esteem. The acronym "NO CHOICE" is used to outline the destructive behaviors. Neglect, both emotional and physical, can make a child feel unworthy and unsupported. Overbearing parenting, where parents dictate everything and live vicariously through their child, can erode the child's boundaries and sense of self. Excessive and unconstructive criticism can be overwhelming for a child, while harsh discipline without redirection leaves them feeling helpless. Overprotective parenting can make children feel incompetent and incapable. Inattentiveness, both in terms of emotional support and quality time, can lead to feelings of neglect. Comparisons to others, including siblings or oneself, can be damaging, and unrealistic expectations can cause disappointment and feelings of failure. Dr. Snipes emphasizes the importance of providing constructive feedback, positive attention, respecting boundaries, using positive discipline, and offering support and encouragement to foster a child's healthy self-esteem.
