Same-Sex Marriage Bill Introduced
Senator Scott Dibble, DFL-Mpls, and Rep. Karen Clark, DFL-Mpls, announce the introduction of a bill allowing same-sex marriage in Minnesota. If approved by the legislature and signed by Governor Dayton, the measure would overturn current law, which recognizes only marriage between opposite sex couples. During the 2012 general election, voters rejected a proposal that would have placed in the state constitution the definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The defeat of the proposed amendment; however, did not overturn Minnesota's law. Proponents of same sex marriage announced their intentions at a Wednesday, February 27, press conference. Also on Wednesday, supporters of Minnesotans for Marriage stressed their reasons for defeating the proposed legislation.
