Sony has been porting its heavy-hitting exclusives to PC for a while now, the most notable being Horizon Zero Dawn (2020), Days Gone (2021) and God of War (2022). These PC ports have garnered high praise, with most titles boasting enhanced features, improved visuals and ultra-wide support, among others. 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man was critically acclaimed upon release and even got great scores in our review. For those that haven’t had the chance to experience the game in anticipation of a PC release all these years, we can safely say the wait is worth it. Additionally, the game will also run on the Steam Deck for some on-the-go web-slinging action. The PC port was developed by PlayStation’s sister studio, Nixxes Software, and is set to release on Steam and Epic Games Store on August 12th, 2022. Porting games is never a straightforward endeavor and can often leave a bitter taste in the mouth. Spider-Man’s port, however, is as precise as his crime-fighting ability. Right from the onset, you get to customize your graphics settings to best suit your system’s capabilities, and the performance delivered is nothing short of seamless. The game looks spectacular as ever complemented by unlocked framerates, and support for other technologies including performance boosting NVIDIA DLSS, and image quality enhancing NVIDIA DLAA. Insomniac’s impression of New York has never felt more alive, with ray-traced reflections and improved shadows delivering an enhanced and truly visceral visual experience, especially when viewed on an ultra-wide monitor. As far as performance goes, the game rarely falters. Framerates are largely stable even at ultra-high settings and there are no game-breaking bugs to be experienced. We did note delayed texture pop-in and some wonky ragdoll physics on an occasion or two, but these instances barely add up to anything and are forgotten almost immediately. Add fully customizable controls for a smooth experience on mouse and keyboard, and you have the recipe for success. This is crucial considering the game demands a fair utilization of gadgets and skills to pull off flashy moves and finessed finishers in those high-octane combat sequences, and the port does so admirably. If you’re among the blessed ones to own a PlayStation 5, the port supports DualSense controllers too with the full backing of immersive haptics and dynamic triggers enabled, letting you enjoy your web-swinging shenanigans just the way you like it. Considering the game was initially launched as a console exclusive, it’s worth noting how well it plays on PC. Unlocked framerates make panning your camera around in intense combat sequences smoother with a mouse, while having the option to map controls makes it a more accessible experience overall. Players often approach PC ports with skepticism as they’re wary of how adaptable the gameplay is to different input devices. With this launch, PlayStation Studios seem to have cracked the code to make it a near-seamless experience on PC. While playing on a controller is by no means a bad experience and might even be considered the default way to play, the keyboard and mouse combo option is a pleasant and much needed departure from some of the clunkier PC ports we’ve seen in the past. If you’re among the blessed ones to own a PlayStation 5, the port supports DualSense controllers, with the full backing of immersive haptics and dynamic triggers enabled, letting you enjoy your web-swinging shenanigans just the way you like it. Other controllers would work too, minus the joy of haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of course. Pre-purchasing the game rewards players with some nice takeaways, including three fancy spidey-suits to make Peter Parker dapper than ever, early access to the Spider-Drone Gadget, and a sprinkling of skill-points to level up your crime-fighting game right from the get-go.
