When we arrived at the scene at five minutes after nine, there were Iraqi police at the scene evacuating wounded civilians. As part of our investigation, we identified a 120 millimetre mortar impacted at a traffic circle, a Russian made mortar, killing initially eight people, wounding 18. Various of wounded civilians STORYLINE: A mortar blast tore through a market in Baqouba north of Baghdad, killing nine civilians and injuring more than a dozen others, Iraqi police said on Friday. The US military said soldiers stationed nearby were probably the target. The mortar round exploded about 9 p.m. (local time) on Thursday at a market in the Sunni Muslim city about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Baghdad. Soldiers from the 4th infantry division in Baqouba were on a routine patrol in the area when they heard an explosion. The US commander of the second brigade of the 4th infantry division said a Russian made 120 mm mortar impacted at a market 300 meters to the south of their command centre. Iraqi Police General Waleed Khalid said nine civilians died and 15 were wounded. US officials put the number of injured at 18. Khalid described the attack as a "criminal act aimed at hurting Iraqi civilians." Around 20 US soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division were at the blast site on Friday, providing security and assisting Iraqi police in the investigation.
