Ask the Specialist: The Future of Cardiology - Charles Russo, MD
http://www.ask-the-specialist.com/ The future of Cardiology is in better, earlier diagnosis and screening of healthy individuals as well as in treatment modalities for sicker individuals. But, the primary prevention of disease is where things are going. In medicine in general, everything is going to become more personalized, not just treating of large groups, but what risk factor do I have, and what do I need? And, that's part of where this Coronary Calcium Score comes in. There are patients that have cholesterols that are astronomically high and don't have blockages. There are people who have what are quote unquote ideal cholesterol levels and have blockages and have had heart attacks and by-pass and angioplasty. In addition, the diagnosis of symptomatic coronary disease in terms of PET-Scanning for the heart, in terms of the CT-Angiogram which has now gone from 64 to 256 slice is going to be there. There are going to be newer technologies for the demonstration of active blockages, and I'm sure there are going to be new avenues of treatment in terms of raising the good cholesterol not just lowering the bad cholesterol. And more aggressive treatment of secondary risk factors such as diabetes.
