욥기는 그 시대적 배경을 창세기에 나오는 족장들의 시대로 보는 것이 좋습니다. 부자의 기준을 가축의 소유에 두었다는 점(욥 1:5), 출애굽 모세 시대 이후 제사장이 주관하던 제사를 욥이 직접 번제로 드렸다는 점을 그 근거로 볼 수 있습니다. 그러나 욥기서가 이스라엘 백성들이 출애굽 이후부터 광야와 가나안 시대를 거치면서 끊임없이 패역하고 반역하다 마침내는 북이스라엘도 남유다도 하나님의 징계를 받아 멸망하고 포로 귀한 시대를 지나 구약의 첫 번째 시가서로 등장하고 있음을 주목해야 합니다. 욥기서에는 단순히 ‘의인이 당하는 고난’의 문제가 아닌 하나님의 자녀, 백성을 향한 하나님의 선택과 사랑이 어떠한 행위에 근거하지 않고 오직 하나님의 지혜와 권능의 주권적인 역사임을 말하고 있습니다. 구약은 이제 욥기를 시작으로 시가서 5권을 포함해서 선지서에서 그 복음의 실체를 더 구체적으로 그려나갈 것입니다. It is good to see the background of Job as the days of the patriarchs in Genesis. It can be seen from the fact that the standard of wealth was on the possession of livestock (Job 1:5), and that the sacrifices administered by the priests after the time of Moses in Exodus were offered by Job himself as a burnt offering. However, with the book of Jobs, we must note that it is the first book of poems in the Old Testament after the Israelites have constantly rebelled from the days of the Exodus through the wilderness and the Canaanite era and finally both northern Israel and southern Judah were destroyed under God's punishment and exiled. The book of Job tells us that God's choice and love for God's children and people is not simply a matter of 'the suffering that the righteous suffer,' but the sovereign works of God with His wisdom and power.
