As Brigadier General Irvin McDowell begins carrying out his complicated battle plan against the Confederates, the first shots of the battle are fired along the Stone Bridge over Bull Run. The early morning skirmishing around Bull Run and the Stone Bridge soon shifts to the west around Matthews Hill, where the fighting quickly escalates as McDowell's flanking columns arrive to engage the outnumbered Confederates around the hill. By morning's end, victory seems to be within the Union's grasp.
