Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, FIRST READING REFLECTION: 2 Timothy 4:10-17 Summary & Reflection: In this passage, St. Paul shares his experiences of being abandoned by several of his companions as he continues his ministry. Demas, Crescens, and Titus have left him, and only Luke remains. Paul also calls for Mark to join him, whom he now finds useful for the work. He mentions being wronged by Alexander the coppersmith, urging vigilance against him. Despite being abandoned during his defense, Paul notes that the Lord stood by him, giving him strength to continue proclaiming the Gospel. Reflection: This passage emphasizes the theme of perseverance in faith despite abandonment and opposition. Paul's human experience of isolation reminds us that we may face hardships and betrayals on our journey, but God’s presence remains steadfast. The Lord strengthens us to continue our mission, even when human support falters. It is a call to rely on God’s strength and not merely on human alliances. For Catholics, this teaches us about the importance of trust in God, especially when facing struggles in our spiritual or personal lives. GOSPEL READING REFLECTION: Luke 10:1-9 Summary & Reflection: In this passage, Jesus appoints seventy-two disciples and sends them out in pairs to preach, instructing them to carry nothing extra. They are to offer peace to each house they enter, and if a man of peace is there, their peace will rest on him. If not, it will return to them. Jesus tells them to accept what is offered and to cure the sick, proclaiming the nearness of God’s kingdom. Reflection: This passage reflects the missionary nature of the Church and the reliance on divine providence for sustenance. The seventy-two disciples are sent with nothing but their faith, trusting in God’s provision through the people they meet. This reminds Catholics of the importance of spiritual detachment from material possessions and of the centrality of proclaiming the Gospel and healing in our interactions. It also speaks to the peace that Christ brings, a peace that should be shared with others, but one that can also return to us if it is not accepted. The passage emphasizes trust in God and openness to the mission He gives us. General Reflection: Both passages highlight the theme of reliance on God’s guidance and provision, even in difficult or uncertain situations. Whether facing abandonment like Paul or setting out on a mission with nothing but faith like the seventy-two disciples, the Christian journey calls for a deep trust in God’s providence and grace.
