Spring crops are planted between rows of tomatoes with salad mix, romaine, spinach, and green beans. A leader is different than a stem, because it can produce a fruit. Some dominant leaders emerge after 3-4 weeks after transplanting. The plants grow about a foot each week. They are pruned on a weekly basis. The lowest 10-12 inches are pruned for air flow and disease prevention. As the season progresses the lower stems are pruned up till the first fruit cluster. Twin is lowered down and the spool is pushed away from the base of the plant. At the end of the year the plants are growing on long diagonals. The tip of the plant will be 20-30 feet down the row. The end 5-6 plants are twirled around like a long carousel of tomatoes.
