UK opposition will try to block no-deal Brexit
(29 Aug 2019) UK Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn said on Thursday he would work with opposition parties next week to "politically stop" a no deal Brexit by avoiding a shut-down of parliament. Corbyn accused Prime Minister Boris Johnson of undermining and damaging democracy after the PM moved to suspend parliament on Wednesday. "What we're going to do is try to politically stop him on Tuesday with a parliamentary process in order to legislate to prevent a no deal Brexit and also to try and prevent him shutting down Parliament during this utterly crucial period," he said. The Labour Leader began a three-day tour of Scottish constituencies after Scottish Conservative Leader Ruth Davidson announced she was quitting the party. Richard Leonard, Scottish Labour Party leader, said he thought there were both personal and political reasons for her depature. "Clearly she is at odds with Boris Johnson and I think that she represents a division that exists inside the Conservative Party. I don't think it's any accident that this announcement has been made the day after Boris Johnson decided to prorogue Parliament, has decided to turn his back on parliamentary democracy," he said. The move by Johnson to suspend Parliament could make it more likely that Britain falls out of the European Union on Oct. 31 without a deal, wreaking havoc for people and businesses. The decision was slammed by some as being dictatorial, but Brexit supporters cheered it as a decisive move to finally bring the country out of the EU three years after the 2016 referendum.
