Ceanothus and Manzanitas are some of the most beautiful shrubs that California has to offer — But they aren’t always the easiest to grow. With our helpful tips you’ll be growing Ceanothus and Manzanitas like a pro! Our favorite easier-to- grow Ceanothus cultivars include Concha, Ray Hartman, and Valley Violet. For Manzanitas, we recommend Howard McMinn, Sunset, and John Dourley.    If you’re looking for a larger manzanita shrub, Dr. Hurd and Byrd Hill are excellent choices.   Although these cultivars are listed as tolerant of full sun or part shade in inland areas, we find them easiest to grow in morning sun and afternoon shade whenever that’s possible, helping keep the soil cooler on hot summer afternoons.
