Yellow rumped Warbler showing concealed colors
Something about being able to see the yellow crown patch in this bird makes me so happy. The Yellow-rumped Warbler (YRWA) is our most abundant overwintering warbler and a more and more common feeder bird (thank you, Bark Butter!) but hardly anyone ever gets to see the yellow patch in the crown of the adult male. In this video, however, it features prominently in one of the birds. There is another YRWA in this video that shows us one of the other typically concealed patches of yellow color on this species - the one for which it's named - the yellow rump. Of course, this patch is only concealed when the bird is perched and its wings are folded back in such a way that the yellow rump patch is covered. That just happens to be the normal way that wings are folded back. In flight, the yellow rump is revealed. Observe and smile.
