/oʊ/ vs /u/ Minimal Pairs - American English Vowel Sounds - #englishlisteningpractice #vowelsounds

This video will help train your ear to hear the difference between the /oʊ/ as in ROSE vowel sound and the /u/ as in BLUE vowel sound. Listen to each Minimal Pair and repeat the words aloud. (Minimal Pairs are two words that sound the same EXCEPT FOR one sound). The /oʊ/ as in ROSE sound is a diphthong - or moving sound. The mouth position changes as the sound is formed. Begin with your lips rounded in a big circle and move them into a smaller tighter O with your lips puckered forward as they are when making the /w/ sound. As the circle created by your lips gets smaller, the tongue moves from a middle to high position. Sample words: NO, DON'T, GO To produce the /u/ as in BLUE vowel sound, the lips are rounded and extended forward, as if blowing out candles. The tongue is slightly tense and in a high position.
