Shepherd's Pie is a classic British comfort dish traditionally made with ground lamb, vegetables like carrots and peas, and topped with a layer of creamy mashed potatoes. The savory filling is usually seasoned with herbs like thyme and rosemary, giving it a rich, hearty flavor. The dish is baked until the potatoes are golden and crispy on top, creating a satisfying contrast to the tender meat and vegetables beneath. While lamb is traditional, ground beef can be used instead, in which case the dish is often called Cottage Pie. It's a warm, comforting meal that's perfect for chilly days. Drain and grate them. Add butter, milk, salt, pepper, thyme , rosemary and mix until smooth. Add yolk and mix until smooth. Set aside. 2-Make the filling: Preheat your oven to (180Ā°C). In a large pan, heat oil or over medium heat. Add the chopped onions , garlic and cook until they start to soften, about 2-3 minutes. Add the carrots and cook for another 3 minute. Add the ground lamb (or beef )and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Add salt, pepper and chilli flakes. Stir in the tomato paste, thyme, and rosemary. Then add flour and cook until raw smell disappears.Cook for a minute until well combined. Pour in the broth and bring to a simmer. Let it cook for about 10 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly. 3- Assemble the pie: Transfer the meat filling to a large baking dish. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top of the meat mixture. If desired, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top of the potatoes. 4. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling around the edges. 5. Serve: Let the Shepherd's Pie rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy! This recipe makes about 4-6 servings.
