Faces of the Flight Deck - Flight Deck Control

ATLANTIC OCEAN - The Flight Deck Control officer (a person) communicates with Sailors on the flight deck from the ship's Flight Deck Control Center (a room) and keeps track of all aircraft positions on the flight deck and aboard the aircraft carrier. The Flight Deck Control officer is part of a functional group of Sailors known as "yellow shirts" who are responsible for the safe movement of aircraft on the flight deck and in the hangar bay. The Flight Deck Control officer also works with Sailors to log aircraft positions on the aircraft status board. The ship's Flight Deck Control Center is one of the busiest spaces on the ship during flight operations with flight deck personnel constantly coming in and out, keeping track of information. See a Flight Deck Control officer during flight operations on the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) underway in support of carrier qualifications.
