Nintendo Is Only PRETENDING To Care About Game Key Cards
Nintendo’s latest Partner Showcase, held at the end of July 2025, delivered a stacked lineup of third-party titles coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. Major announcements included Monster Hunter, Persona 3, Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment, PacMan World 2, and Yakuza. The showcase highlighted Nintendo’s growing commitment to third-party support for the Switch 2, and fans were excited to see these titles arriving sooner than expected—many with 2025 release windows. That excitement quickly turned to concern when it was revealed that nearly every physical release from the showcase will use Nintendo’s controversial Game Key Card format. The rest are effectively “physical” boxes that require players to download the full game from the internet using a license embedded in the card—blurring the line between physical and digital ownership on the Switch 2. In what appears to be a response to rising backlash, Nintendo has begun circulating a consumer survey that directly asks players about their thoughts on Game Key Cards and how they feel about owning games physically versus digitally. While the survey doesn’t confirm any policy changes, it suggests Nintendo is gauging sentiment around this growing shift—and possibly preparing for more Game Key Card releases in the future. Despite the pushback from collectors and preservationists, the broader market tells a different story. According to many industry reports, about 90% of gaming revenue now comes from digital sales, subscriptions, and microtransactions.
