A Night of Culture, Tradition, and Volleyball: Chinese New Year Celebration at SimpliFi Arena
On January 17, 2025, the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) supported a vibrant Chinese New Year celebration during the 2025 Rainbow Warrior volleyball game at SimpliFi Arena, as part of the Mixed Plate Series. The evening intertwined cultural traditions, performances, and collegiate athletics in a festive experience. Two dedicated CCS student volunteers, Qi Zhang (PhD Student in Art and Theatre) and Yuhui Du (HPU Graduate with a TESOL MA degree), served as Chinese broadcasters during the game, adding a special cultural touch to the event. Fans enjoyed a unique experience with videos produced by CCS. These videos explored the tradition of Chinese New Year in China, the history of Chinese Studies at UH, demographic insights on early Chinese immigrants in Hawai‘i, and the role Hawai‘i played in shaping the life of Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of modern China. With festive decorations in the arena, we created a joyful atmosphere to welcome the Year of the Snake. In true Mixed Plate fashion, the evening celebrated the diversity and unity of the University of Hawai‘i community by blending athletic excellence with cultural appreciation. Here’s to a new year filled with prosperity, unity, and shared experiences. Gong Xi Fa Cai!
