Health Focus: Dealing with eclampsia in pregnant women
Pre-eclampsia or eclampsia is a disorder of pregnancy characterised by high blood pressure and a large amount of protein in the urine. The disorder usually occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy and worsens over time. Mild pre-eclampsia affects 5 - 10% of all registered pregnancies in the country and 1% turns out fatal. Though the trigger is not clearly identifiable, damaged blood vessels, immune system problems and insufficient uterine blood flow are possible causes. In this week’s health focus, Walter Mwesigye spoke to Dr.Simon Nuwagaba, a gyaenecologist with Norvik hospital, about this condition.
