(6 Feb 2008) HEADLINE: Military: Video shows al-Qaida in Iraq training children --------------------------------------- CAPTION: Videotapes seized during U.S. raids on suspected al-Qaida in Iraq hideouts show the terror group training young boys to kidnap and assassinate civilians, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Wednesday. (Feb 06) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] The U-S military released videos today that it says shows young boys being trained to kidnap and assassinate civilians. Officials say the tapes were discovered during raids on suspected Al-Qaida in Iraq hideouts. (SOT: REAR ADMIRAL GREGORY SMITH, U.S. MILITARY SPOKESMAN) IN FURTHER PROOF OF THE OBJECTIVES THAT AL-QAIDA WILL GO TO ACHIEVE ITS OBJECTIVES IN IRAQ, I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU SOME PHOTOS AND MATERIAL RECENTLY OBTAINED OFF AN OBJECTIVE SHOWING SHOWING HOW THESE TERRORISTS EXPLOIT CHILDREN. The military showed the tapes at a news conference. Rear Admiral Gregory Smith says they indicate a pattern of using children for sinister means. (SOT: REAR ADMIRAL GREGORY SMITH, U.S. MILITARY SPOKESMAN) WE BELIEVE THE PURPOSE OF THESE VIDEOS WAS TO PRODUCE TRAINING FILMS WHICH PROMULGATED THROUGHOUT IRAQ ENCOURAGING OTHER YOUTH AND PRESUMABLY THEIR PARENTS TO BEGIN THE NECESSARY TRAINING AND INDOCTRINATION TOWARD BECOMING AL-QAIDA TERRORIST, EFFICIENT AT CARRYING OUT VIOLENCE AGAINST FELLOW IRAQIS. One tape shows boys storming a house and holding guns to the heads of mock residents. (SOT: U.S. MILITARY SPOKESMAN REAR ADMIRAL GREGORY SMITH) YOU'LL SEE THE BOYS ARE GIVING OUT ORDERS TO THE GENTLEMAN THERE THAT'S BEING OBVIOUSLY KIDNAPPED. THEY'RE BEING TOLD BY A MALE INSTRUCTOR OFF CAMERA HERE OUT TO INTERDICT A CAR, HOW TO TO TAKE THE PASSENGERS OUT OF THE CAR. YOU CAN SEE THEY'RE ALL HEAVILY ARMED. THAT ONE BOY IN THE BACK HAS A GRENADE IN HIS HAND. YOU SEE ALL THE ADULTS IN THE BACKGROUND THERE WATCHING. THESE ARE THE BOYS, JUST YOUNG CHILDREN BELOW AGE ELEVEN. An Iraqi official says militants are increasingly kidnapping children.
