That is alright and above the adult average typing speed of 40WPM. However, I found the method that I had made up myself to be not the most adequate or efficient method of typing. I wasn't maximising my finger usage and would only end up using 6 fingers (excluding the thumbs). I would use my left ring finger for A, left middle finger for S, and left index finger for D. I would use my right finger for K, right middle finger for J, and right index finger for H. Thus, my pinkies would just be floating carelessly, often causing me pain during prolonged classes, and more so in exams. Although my typing speed was sufficient during my time in High School, I always had the constant need to check my keyboard to get my bearings and to see if my fingers were in the "right" place with my self-made method. Furthermore, I would struggle with punctuations such as colons and quotation marks, which further reduces my speed. Thus, I decided it was time to master the art that is touch typing. I opted to utilise all my fingers. The thumbs don't really matter much because they are primarily for the spacebar. I use the left thumb most of the time, but sometimes I would use the right thumb. It is quite situational and happens subconsciously for me. Nevertheless, I found that changing my typing technique was extremely difficult. Going from 90WPMish to a mere 30WPM with the touch-typing method was gut-wrenching. I knew it was going to be hard to rewire my brain and relearn how to type the correct way. This is why I opted to learn the technique at the end of Year 13. No classes and free time at hand. For the next 3 months, I would constantly use websites such as MonkeyType and TypeRacer. At first, I would struggle as I had the urge to retract towards my bad typing practices. In spite of that, I got better at touch-typing, and I saw progress. Also, I felt my typing was much more fluid and consistent. I primarily focused on precisions instead of typing really fast. This is where most people make the mistake. You shouldn't rush into things when trying something new. It's like driving 100 km/h when driving for the first time. It's rather imbecilic, and it's not gonna help you improve. I focused on nearing close to 100% accuracy. As my typing became more accurate, my speed also gradually began to increase linearly. Of course, speed is going to decay and flatten out eventually due to us just being mere humans, but it's what I found gave me the biggest progress. Focusing on accuracy is much more important in the long run than just trying to type fast. In the video, you will see that I am only typing at around 80%, I could type at 100%, but that would just be putting my accuracy at risk, thus putting my WPM for that race at jeopardy. At this level of speed, it doesn't really make sense why you would want to type any faster. It is more than sufficient and will help you take notes for classes/lecturers, which is another reason why I wanted to be able to type faster. University lecturers and tutors aren't going to tell you what to write down in your notes. You need to make up for yourself what you need to take down, what is of importance, and in a timely manner. The lecturers and tutors aren't going to wait for you to write your notes down. There are over hundreds of students in these rooms, so you need to know what you're doing. Fun story - I was in a tutorial for BUS112. I was writing down one of the slides on the screen without looking at my laptop, literally just looking at the projector screen and typing (reminiscent of the SIDEMEN no-look crossbar challenge). The table to my left looked at me in absolute shock, and I heard a girl mumbling, "what the FK". I was absolutely shocked that she said the F word. I was almost at the point of putting my hand up and telling my tutor that she had said the F word. But I was too focused on the task ahead of me. I continued typing at light speed like the absolute G that I am and avoided any hindrances from thereon. Anyway, where was I?- Uh- Also, don't copy everything off the slides; the slides are provided to you, so only take relevant information. Focus more on what the tutor is telling you. Thank you for reading, and hope you enjoyed this video :D Also, sorry for the ambient noise, I can't really control it, and I'm using the mic on my headset 💀 Peace! Avg. WPM - MonkeyType: 128WPM Avg.
