The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on the Third Sunday of Advent, December 11, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, PA. Ms. Deanna Briody, McNulty Intern, was the preacher. Assisting: The Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen, Rector, The Reverend Cameron J. Soulis, Associate Rector, The Reverend Geoffrey Royce, Deacon, Alan Lewis, Organist and Director of Music, Jon Tyillian, Assistant Organist. Musical & Liturgical Notes: Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) was an eccentric composer of the late-Romantic era. He was best known for his organ music, which was the subject of a special festival in his honor in London in 1930, and he visited the United States as a touring performer two years later, sadly without notable appreciation. But his many settings of Lutheran chorales include some real gems, including this morning’s treatment of Sleepers, wake!, first published as part of a cycle of 66 organ works in 1909. Gerre Hancock (1934-2012) was a noted American organist and church-musician, based for many years at St. Thomas Church, New York City. His Advent anthem, The Lord will surely come, dates from 1990. Two distinct musical elements alternate, and eventually combine: a chant hymn-melody set to the repeated prayer, Kyrie eleison (the melody is that of the hymn we sing at communion this morning), and a declamatory setting of words from the Epistle to the Philippians. The Postlude is an extended organ-setting of the Magnificat, or Song of Mary; a plainchant formula associated with that canticle underlies the ten successive sections, each representing a verse of the canticle, from Luke 1:46-55.
