What to do when someone is having an asthma attack
An asthma puffer, also termed a metered dose inhaler (MDI), works to relieve smooth muscle contraction within an airway. Otherwise known as a bronchodilator, Salbutamol is quick to take effect, but also fairly quick to wear off and so multiple doses may need to be administered to take effect. In Australian first aid, we apply the 4x 4x 4x technique to relieve moderate to severe asthma symptoms. Here one puff of the inhaler is delivered into the spacer and the patient is encouraged to take 4x breaths. This process is repeated 4x. Following this administration of the medication first aiders must wait for 4x minutes for this to take effect. If little to no improvement First aiders are advised to repeat the process as necessary, until further medical help arrives. For some hands on training with our placebo inhalers and spacers join us at one of our paramedic led, public first aid classes - running every week in Perth’s northern suburbs. 🌐 https://www.actionandemergency.com.au...
