Francis Fayez Sunday, November 9, 2025 Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (Cathedral of Rome) Scriptural motto: “God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple” (1 Cor 3:17) Brief Spiritual Introduction On this feast we learn that God does not seek cold stones but living hearts. The Lateran — “Mother of all Churches”—points to Christ, the Father’s Temple, from whose pierced side flow living waters that make us the temple of the Spirit. As we stand around the altar, the Lord calls us to cleanse the temple: to have the tables of distraction, show, and gain overturned within us, so that zeal of love may burn, and our worship become “in Spirit and truth,” with rivers of grace flowing from our parish into our homes and streets. Homily Title Cleansing the Temple: From Stone to Body—Christ the Temple, and the Church the Temple of the Spirit Spiritual Theme for the Readings • Ezekiel 47: A river flows from the temple and brings life wherever it goes—an image of baptismal grace and the Spirit poured out from Christ to the Church. • Psalm 46: “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God”— God is in the midst of His people; therefore their hearts shall not be shaken. • 1 Corinthians 3:9c–11, 16–17: The only foundation is Jesus Christ; we are “God’s temple and His Spirit dwells in us”—the holiness of stones begins with the holiness of the heart. • John 2:13–22: Jesus cleanses the temple, declaring that His body is the true naos; our worship is purified from commerce to become “in Spirit and truth.” Mass Readings • Ezekiel 47:1–2, 8–9, 12 • Psalm 46:2–3, 5–6, 8–9 • 1 Corinthians 3:9c–11, 16–17 • John 2:13–22 Invitation We gather at the two tables — the Word and the Eucharist—to renew the consecration of the Lord’s church and of our hearts, making them a holy temple from which the river of life flows into every home.
