14 Ultimate N55 Engine Mods & Upgrades: BMW Tuning: 400hp, 500hp & Getting Over 800hp

We look at 14 of the best mods and upgrades for your N55 engine and we talk about tuning them to 400, 500 and over 800hp. This video will show you where to start and which mods are the most cost effective on your N55 engine whether it is in an E90, E91, E92, E93 335i E82 E88 135i 335i E70 or E71. It was the first straight six to use a twin scroll turbo charger and was extremely fluid with a DOHC VVT and VVL. It produced reasonable power from 1250rpm and crested at around 4500rpm, providing a near perfect torque band before reaching the speed cutoff at 7000rpm. Because BMW intended the engine to function reliably and retain the feel of a much larger v8, throttle lag was practically non-existent (for a turbo engine). The N55 prefers higher octane gasoline because it provides more power and better efficiency, with most users saying that the expense per mile is the same as when using low octane fuel. The N54 and N55 engines were identical in many ways, but the most notable change was that the later N55 model had a contemporary single twinscroll turbine, as opposed to the N54's twin-turbocharger. A single turbo is less expensive, lighter, and has a few advantages, but the twin-turbo configuration provides more possible power increases from upgrades. However, the benefits of a bigger single twin scroll turbo are still substantial and sufficient for most tuning tasks. Surprisingly, Alpina chose a twin turbo system in their performance versions. Generally, the N55 improved on the N54 and was in production from 2009 to 2015, when it was superseded by the B57 engine. With the introduction of the Alpina tuned models we saw the N55 factory power varies from a respectable 302 bhp to 425 bhp and with mapping adjustments it is possible to add around 80hp on the basic engine. Air Induction kits and Exhaust will NOT usually ADD TORQUE for most stock N55 configurations on their own, but they will allow you to increase power after other improvements by removing the limitation you hit with other mods as the factory setup runs out of capacity to cope. Flowing and porting the Head - Flowing and porting the head will get air streaming into the engine while eliminating turbulence or limitations. Turbo upgrades - forced induction is the most important method to increase the air flow to your intake, enabling you to consume more gasoline and gain power. N55 remapping offers the most power for the money, but new ECUs and integrated Tuning boxes are also options.
