Holy Innocents Today, the Church venerates as martyrs the infants massacred by King Herod in Bethlehem and its surroundings, in his attempt to eliminate the ‘infant king’ – Jesus – and make secure his own reign. The Gospel, in narrating the sad episode of the slaying of these infants, reflects the pathological state of Herod’s mind. Herod moved from one sinful act to another, killing members of his family and later, the leading citizens in Judea. The first reading from John cautions us precisely against such behaviour. We are reminded that when we refuse to admit our sin, we choose to live in darkness, away from the purging light of God. Consequently, we will only move deeper into darkness for fear that the light will expose us! Such people would be liars to claim that they are in union with God, for God is pure light!
