To see the full interview, check    • Dr. Patrick Hamilton on Zombies & Pop Culture   ---------------------- We were able to talk to Dr. Patrick Hamilton, professor and pop culture fanatic! Dr. Hamilton continues to find meaning and metaphor in pop culture, discussing not just what it is, but what it says about us. He offers insights on what zombies reflect in our society and how often there is much more depth around their depictions. Often narratives around zombies are less about the monsters and more about the humans. In this talk, we discussed the use of monsters and pop culture in a society, how zombies reflect the society, what The Walking Dead says about humanity, the use of zombies as a metaphor, The Last of Us and societal fears, Dawn of the Dead and zombies as victims, the different types of zombies, the biggest misconception about zombies, the news media's use of zombies, what can be learned from zombies, mummies vs zombies and the uncanny, minecraft, his favorite zombie film, and also what YOU should know about zombies... From his bio: Dr. Patrick Hamilton specializes in Chicano/a and U.S. multi-ethnic literature, as well as the study of narrative and race/ethnicity in comics and graphic novels. He received his PhD from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 2006, and, prior to that, his M.A. from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. In his book, Of Space & Mind: Cognitive Mappings of Contemporary Chicano/a Fiction (University of Texas Press, 2011), he explores the ways in which Chicano/a novelists from the late twentieth century challenge the ways we think and have been taught to think about the position of Chicanos/as within U.S. society. Dr. Hamilton has taught a wide variety of courses at Misericordia University, including ones in 19th and 20th century American literature, Chicano/a literature, U.S. multi-ethnic literature, the detective in literature, and magical realism. With Dr. Allan Austin of the History Department, he team-teaches a course in race and ethnicity in post-World War II graphic narrative. Currently, he and Dr. Austin are working on a critical history of race and ethnicity in superhero popular culture.
