Today I will summarize Romans chapter 6, where Paul explained how believers are dead to sin and alive to God. Paul began teaching, saying ‘should we continue to sin so grace may increase? That’s foolish. The answer is obviously ‘no’. Everyone who has been baptized into Jesus has been baptized into his death. We have been buried with him through baptism into death, and in the same way Jesus was resurrected from the dead, so we too should walk in newness of life. We are like Jesus in his death, and we will be like him in His resurrection. Whoever has died is free from sin. You and your sin nature died with Jesus on the cross. Paul continued, ‘Jesus will never die again. He died once for all, but is now alive forevermore. In the same way consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Jesus Christ. Do not let sin reign in your mortal bodies to obey its lusts. You can now fight it and actually win. Do not offer your body as an instrument for sin. Sin shall no longer be master over you. Offer your bodies as instruments for righteousness instead. Paul taught, ‘should we sin because we are no longer under law but under grace? No. You offered yourself to God as a slave when you died to your old sin nature and repented for your sin. When you were slaves to sin and dead in your spirit, you could not be righteous even if you wanted to. But you didn’t even want to. You were slaves to wickedness, and you earned and deserved eternal death. But God rescued you and freed you, and He gave you a free gift of grace, forgiveness, and eternal life. The most important verse in this chapter is Romans 6:23 which states, ‘For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.’ The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that all true Christians had sinful spirits that died with Jesus on the cross, and they were resurrected with Jesus. Because we died to our old nature, we are free to live holy and righteous lives. Previously, we could not do any good thing from God’s perspective because we were slaves to sin and wickedness. Now that we have new life and are slaves to God, we should offer ourselves as instruments of righteousness to glorify Him. We should fight against every sinful temptation and win. And God wants us to know that the payment for sin is eternal death, but He gave us a free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Are you a slave to sin, or are you a slave to God? There is no third choice. Why don’t you accept God’s free gift. It is free for us, but it cost Him everything. Repent for your sin and turn to Jesus for salvation. He is holding out His righteousness for you to take. Reach out your hand and take it. Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross as your substitute, and the Father raised Jesus from the dead. God said if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe in your heart that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved. Why don’t you do that right now?
