Step-by-step positive reinforcement + shaping (successive approximations) so your dog brings a still object to your hand. We cover interest → brief hold → clean release → add distance → encourage carry → generalize to new rooms/surfaces → add the cue (“get it”). Works for cans, remotes, mail/packages, etc. Force-free, no e-collar, no prong, no punishment. What you’ll learn • Retrieve vs fetch (bring a stationary object) • Build interest in the item (light can + koozie) • Teach a short hold (½–2s) and drop/let go • Use successive approximations / shaping with a marker (“yes” or clicker) • Fix chewing and dropping (shorten holds, trade, reward small wins) • Add distance and encourage carry (run away to invite movement) • Generalize: floor → table/sofa → different rooms/outside • Add the cue at the right time (say “get it” as they do it) • Keep it tidy ethically: invitation/permission + simple management Troubleshooting • Dog won’t approach? Reward a look → sniff → nose touch first. • Chewing the object? Reinforce shorter holds, then trade. • Dropping early? Pay 1–2s carries, increase distance gradually. • Confused?
