Why Disciples Need Abiding Love (John 15:9-17) What’s the context of John 15:9-17? Before John 15:9-17, Gospel Writer John talks about vine and branches metaphor. Why disciples need abiding love? 6th Sunday of Easter Gospel reading. The Father is the vine grower, Jesus is the vine, and the disciples are the branches. And the essential Jesus’ invitation is to abide in his love to bear fruit. The focus of the passage. Our today’s passage John 15:9-17 allow us to interpret the vine and branches in term of love. The focus is on the abiding relationship of love that binds Father, Son and disciples into one. The focus is on the empowering love of the Son by which he laid down his life for his friends. What’s the meaning of Just as love? You hear Jesus say: Just as the Father has loved me, I have loved you in verse 9 and again in verse 12 Jesus says: just as I have loved you. The just as the motif is repeated 31 times in the Gospel of John. It is so important to John theology of the mutual relationship of the Father, Son and disciples. It is a mirror. Just as the Father has love, so the Son loves. The Son imitates the Father’s love.
