How to calm the mind and stop thinking – a zen story on patience, mindfulness and inner growth
Once, a young monk sat by the shore, gazing at the vast ocean stretching before him. The waves rolled in gently, sometimes crashing with force, then receding, leaving intricate patterns in the sand. Day after day, the boy watched, transfixed, yet puzzled. His teacher had sent him here with a simple instruction: observe the waves, and in time, he would understand a fundamental truth about his own mind. But as days and weeks passed, the boy grew frustrated. Despite hours of watching, he couldn’t grasp what he was supposed to learn. His thoughts churned like the ocean itself, restless and impatient. One day, no longer able to contain his frustration, he returned to his master. “Master,” he said, “you asked me to watch the waves, but no matter how long I look, no insight comes to mind. What am I supposed to understand?” The master stand next to him and gently replied, “Why are you in such a hurry, my young one? Do you see the waves? They’re like your thoughts—endlessly coming and going, rising and falling. They stir up, make noise, and sometimes crash with force. Yet beneath the surface, the ocean is vast, still, and deep.” He paused, letting the boy absorb his words. “If the waves quiet down, you would see the ocean’s depth more clearly.” The master looked into the boy’s eyes. “Your mind is the same. When it’s calm and free from disturbance, you will glimpse its true nature.” With this new understanding, the young monk returned to the shore. This time, as he watched the waves, he let them come and go without clinging, sensing the depth beneath—both in the ocean and in his mind. Dear friends, in life we experience moments of joy, worry, and sometimes frustration. These emotions, like waves, rise and fall, coming and going. As we seek mindfulness, let us remember to notice these waves without being carried away by them. Beneath all emotions lies a calm, peaceful ocean within—a steady depth that is always there, waiting to bring us back to peace. #patience #mindfulness #innergrowth --- Disclaimer: The content shared on this channel is for educational and informational purposes only.
