Solemnity of Jesus Christ the King | 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time | Gospel of St. Luke 23:35-43
What is the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe, also known as the feast of Jesus Christ the King? Why do we celebrate this feast day? Why does it take place around the end of November on the last day of the Liturgical Year? What is the meaning of Jesus Christ the King of the Universe? • What is the meaning of Jesus Christ the Ki... what is the history of the Feast of Jesus Christ the KING? • what is the history of the Feast of Jesus ... The word “Christ” or “Christos” in the Greek; means “the anointed one” or the “messiah”, which is already a direct reference to Jesus, the "anointed one", the "King". It’s also always important for us to make the clear distinction between the KINGDOM of this world and the KINGDOM of GOD. For example, Kingship of this world include wealth and riches, honor and power and glory. Jesus Christ the King is different. Christ was born in a manger and crucified on the cross; and every year when we celebrate this feast of Christ the King, we are reminded that while the kingdoms of this world rise and fall and enter into the pages of history, the Kingdom of GOD will always remain forever and ever. Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in his encyclical Quas primas of 1925 to remind us that God's Kingdom will never End. LK 23:35-43: The rulers sneered at Jesus and said, "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God." Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself." Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews." Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us." The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
