LESSON THREE: THE GOOD SHEPHERD

LESSON THREE: THE GOOD SHEPHERD

LESSON THREE THE GOOD SHEPHERD (JOHN 10:1-18) INTRODUCTION The image of shepherd has a long history in the Bible. The patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, were all shepherds. David, the great king of Israel, was also a shepherd. In many places the kings and leaders of Israel were referred to as bad shepherds. Jesus is referred to in some places as the “lamb of God” making us think of His role as the perfect sacrifice. In today’s passage, Jesus calls Himself “The Good Shepherd” and then tells us in detail what that means. PART ONE: WHAT DID WE READ? 1) Jesus begins chapter ten by contrasting what two figures? 2) Jesus refers to Himself using several different metaphors in this passage. What are they? 3) What does the Good Shepherd do? 4) Does the Shepherd do what He does of His own free will? 5) Who does the Shepherd know? PART TWO: WHAT DOES IT MEAN? 1) Why does Jesus contrast good shepherds with thieves and bad ones? 2) What did Jesus mean when he said that He was the gate? 3) Why do you think that sacrifice is such an important part of the role of Shepherd? 4) Why is knowing the Shepherd and being known by Him emphasized so much? 5) Why is it significant that Jesus did what He did voluntarily? PART THREE: HOW DOES IT APPLY TO US? 1) How does the image of the Good Shepherd speak to you? 2) Who have you followed during your life? Has it always been the Good Shepherd, or have you followed other leaders? To what degree? 3) Why is it important to know and follow the Shepherd? Do you feel that you know His voice? 4) Do you feel that Jesus is indeed your gate to God? 5) What difference does it make to you that Jesus volunteered to lay down His life for you? PRAYER Prayer to Follow Jesus, the Good Shepherd Gentle Jesus, compassionate and caring Good Shepherd, help me to follow You faithfully. Strengthen me daily with Your love, and guide me along life's paths. Keep me free from every evil, protect me from sickness and danger, and lead me to serve You with all my mind and heart and soul. Hear my needs and grant my prayers. Bless me each day with peace of mind and heart. May I experience Your saving power in my daily life, as I await the fullness of life and joy with You forever.
