Advanced Clinical Care- Management of HIV during pregnancy
South Africa is committed to attaining the UNAIDS 90/90/90 targets to control the HIV epidemic through quality comprehensive health services and use of highly effective antiretroviral treatment (ART). The principal goal of ART is to attain and maintain viral suppression, which will decrease morbidity and mortality from HIV as well as improve the quality of life for people living with HIV. Sub-optimal viral suppression during pregnancy poses significant risks. The maternal HIV viral load level is by far the most predictive factor for perinatal HIV transmission. Higher HIV viral loads correlate with a greater risk of perinatal transmission. Optimal patient-centred management is therefore fundamental in preventing morbidity and mortality in both expecting mothers and their unborn children.
