Yi Sun Shin was the greatest admiral in history, victorious in 23 out of 23 naval battles against the fearsome samurais during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. Admiral Yi would often look upon his twin swords to gain inspiration and courage before battle. The highlight of his career -- which immortalized his name -- was defeating 133 Japanese ships with only 13 Korean war ships. After this battle, Japanese admirals dared not challenge him, but trembled at the sound of his name. The legendary Japanese Admiral Togo, who defeated the Russian navy in 1905--Russia having one of the greatest navy at the time--said, "It may be proper to compare me with British Admiral Hiratio Nelson [the greatest admiral known to the Western world], but not with Korea's Yi Sun Shin, for he has no equal." This Admiral Yi Sun Shin sword is approximately half the size of the original. (The twin swords that Admiral Yi had commissioned in 1594 are over 6 feet in length.) Inscribed on this blade are the words that Yi Sun Shin had inscribed on his twin swords: "With this 6-foot sword, I swear to Heaven, as the seas and mountains tremble. I whip -- I sweep. The rivers and hills are dyed red with the blood of my enemies."
