Oil Leaking Into Car Exhaust: Common Causes And Easy Fixes

Oil Leaking Into Car Exhaust: Common Causes And Easy Fixes. In this video I will talk about oil leaking into car exhaust. Here’s what causes it and how to solve the issue: Faulty valve seals Engine valves have seals to prevent oil from entering the combustion chamber, so if they are damaged, oil will seep into the chamber and burn, causing it to escape via the exhaust pipe. Also, they are usually made of plastic, meaning these seals can easily wear out. The most common sign that your valve seals are causing the oil leakage is visible blueish or grayish exhaust smoke. Here's what to do: • Check the oil pan to see the oil level. • If it is too low, get a professional car mechanic to replace the valve seals. A bad PCV valve A Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system passes the blow-by gas into the intake manifold from the crankcase before burning. If the PCV valve is faulty or congested, pressure will build in the crankcase and cause oil leaks in the combustion chamber. Some telltale signs to expect when the PCV valve is the culprit are oil-smeared spark plugs, increased oil consumption, and rough engine idling. Cleaning the PCV valve may solve the issue, and here's how to do it: • Locate your car’s PCV using the owner’s manual and remove the valve. • Inspect the part for debris, buildup, and dirt. • Clean the valve with a small brush, then soak it in a cleaning solvent. • After a few minutes, thoroughly clean the valve with the brush and rinse it with water. • Allow the valve to dry, then reinstall it. • If this does not fix the problem, employ the services of a mechanic to replace the PCV valve. A blown head gasket Another possible cause could be a blown head gasket. The head gasket is the seal between the engine heads and the block. It also separates the oil from other liquids, so if it is damaged, the coolant and oil will mix, causing the oil to burn and pass through the exhaust system. In most cases, you can tell your head gasket is blown if you observe white smoke from your exhaust pipe or notice the engine overheating. The only solution is to have the faulty head gasket professionally replaced by a mechanic. Do this as soon as possible because the longer it goes unfixed, the higher the risk of damaging your engine.
