ॐ नमः शिवाय का अर्थ ॐ एक ध्वनि की भांति प्रतीत होता है परन्तु इस ॐ में ब्रह्माण्ड की सम्पूर्ण शक्ति का वास है। ॐ शब्द तीन अक्षरों से मिलकर बना है – अ उ म। जिसमें से अ का अर्थ है उत्पन्न होना, उ का अर्थ है विकास और म का अर्थ है मौन अवस्था में आ जाना यानी कि ब्रह्मलीन हो जाना। इसके बाद आने वाले शब्द हैं नमः शिवाय जिनका मतलब होता है भगवान शिव को नमस्कार। शैव और सिद्ध परम्परा में शिव के पांच तत्वों का बोध इस प्रकार किया गया है : “न” ध्वनि पृथ्वी का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है “मः” ध्वनि पानी का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है “शि” ध्वनि आग का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है “वा” ध्वनि प्राणिक हवा का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है “य” ध्वनि आकाश का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है इन शब्दों के सम्पूर्ण अर्थ के अनुसार “सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी पर फैली हुई चेतना या ऊर्जा एक ही शिव है”। ओम नमः शिवाय का अर्थ है "शिव की आराधना" या "मैं शिव को नमन करता हूं" - शिव को सर्वोच्च वास्तविकता, आंतरिक स्व या सर्वोच्च स्व के रूप में सम्मानित किया जाता है।  Om Namah Shivaya Meaning Om namah shivaya is a beautiful and beloved prayer and mantra that can be chanted or sung.
