The human liver contains 50000 to 100000 individual lobules. Liver lobules are hexagonal cylindrical structures between 0.8 to 2 mm in diameter. The healthy adult lobules are 1.5 mm in diameter. When the liver is not able to remove toxic substances from blood then it converts them into less toxic substances. Example: Liver converts toxic Ammonia into less toxic Urea.The liver cleans and filters the blood. When the liver has filtered the blood, and broken down harmful substances, its by-products are excreted into the bile or blood. Bile by-products enter the intestine and leave the body as feces (stool).Blood by-products are filtered out by kidneys, and leave the body in the form of urine.When you eat proteins, the intestine bacteria break them down into amino acids. Ammonia is produced from leftover amino acids. This ammonia is absorbed by the microvilli of the small intestine and gets delivered to the liver via the portal vein.
