Today I will be discussing about High blood pressure in pregnancy, Risk factors for High blood pressure in pregnancy, and how to take care of yourself and your baby When your blood pressure is more than 140/90 mmHg , then you have high blood pressure in pregnancy. Types of High blood pressure in pregnancy: 1. Chronic Hypertension 2. Gestational Hypertension 3. Preeclampsia 4. Chronic Hypertension with superimposed preeclampsia Chronic Hypertension- when you have high blood pressure even before your pregnancy. Gestational hypertension- When you are diagnosed with a blood pressure of more than 140/90 mmHg after 20 weeks of pregnancy Preeclampsia- Gestational Hypertension with protein in urine ( proteinuria) Chronic Hypertension with superimposed preeclampsia- When you have new onset proteinuria during pregnancy when you are already a chronic Hypertensive. How often should you check your blood pressure? During your every visit to the Obstetrician. What should you do if your blood pressure is high? Take anti hypertensives medication as prescribed by the doctor. If your blood pressure is very high you might need admission and evaluation of your high blood pressure and subsequent organ damage. How will you be monitored by your doctor? Frequent blood pressure check ups Evaluation of the fetal well being with growth and Doppler scans Preeclampsia blood profile to rule out additional organ damage. Complications of preeclampsia: To the mother: Eclampsia- seizures in pregnancy Damage to kidneys, liver, brain if not well controlled. To the baby: Fetal growth restriction Decreased water around tha baby Decreased blood flow to the baby. Warning ⚠️ signs: Sudden weight gain Headache Vomiting 🤮 Blurred vision Edema Decreased fetal movements Chest discomfort Bleeding🩸 Pain in your abdomen. Risk factors for High blood pressure in pregnancy: Young and old mothers First pregnancy Obesity Chronic Hypertensive Kidney problems Autoimmune problems Diabetes Preeclampsia in previous pregnancy. Multiple pregnancy IVF pregnancy Will these complications occurr to all women? No. Only in some especially when blood pressure is not controlled. When will the blood pressure get controlled?
