What type of thyroid hormone will optimize thyroid physiology? (part 1) #ThyroidThursday
My personal belief is that if you need thyroid hormone replacement therapy, you should take the lowest dose needed. The goal should not be to optimize labs, but rather to optimize the conversion of T4 to T3 at the cell level by reducing the cell stress impacting it. If you feel awesome on the medication you’re on - that’s awesome! If you feel less than stellar and you’re just trying to optimize values, then you and your physician are missing the point. It’s not about the special dose, but rather what is causing the cells to not utilize the thyroid hormones. When the gland is undergoing excessive stress, the conversion of T4 to T3 is decreased. This isn’t broken physiology, it’s adaptive physiology. It’s your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. And no amount of medicine is going to “fix” the underlying root cause. Manipulating the lab values in the effort to “optimize” is not only misleading, but it’s not fixing the problem. I have a client who is taking 1.5x daily production of T4 and 2x daily production of T3, her TSH is undetectable, and she’s experiencing both hypo and hyperthyroid symptoms. Make sure to listen to the full video to hear more about her situation. I’ll be continuing this conversation next week, so be sure to look out for that. Let me know down below if you have any questions. If you’re struggling with your dose and feel like you’re on a “lab optimizing” rollercoaster, feel free to schedule a 15-minute discovery call with me.
