Opioid (also called narcotic) analgesics work by binding to receptors on cells mainly in the brain, spinal cord and gastrointestinal system. Opioids are often very effective against pain, but they also carry a greater risk of side effects than acetaminophen. These opioids include tramadol, oxycodone, fentanyl, methadone, dextromethorphan, meperidine, codeine, and buprenorphine. These opioids have the potential to cause serotonin syndrome and should be used cautiously with other agents with serotonergic activity. Opioids are a type of narcotic drug that include fentanyl, oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine and the illegal drug heroin. Doctors prescribe opioids for managing pain. Narcotic analgesics are usually administered for the relief of severe pain associated with fractures, burns, renal colic, coronary occlusion, etc., while the non-narcotic analgesics are generally given for headaches, muscular aches and pains of inflammatory origin. Non-narcotic (non-addictive) analgesics Non-narcotic analgesics are medications used to control pain and inflammation and that do not act on the central nervous system. They don’t contain narcotic drugs like Opioids which cause heavy addiction. Narcotic drugs are the medications which interact with the nervous system and cause addiction on prolonged use like morphine, codeine, etc. This type of drug is generally used for relieving the skeleton pain which can happen due to arthritis. Aspirin and paracetamol are the most common drugs in this case. Examples of non-narcotic drugs are Aspirin, Disprin, Ibuprofen and Paracetamol.
